Product Placement Strategies

In the current world full of advertising and other marketing communication messages consumers are more likely to skip through advertisements and change the channel during television commercial breaks.

Also with on-demand media growing, new advertising methods are becoming a growing trend in Turkey.

The product placement methodology involves well-known content endorsing products or services outside of a clearly labeled commercial environment.

Already product placement is called the “new generation” advertising in Turkey.

Actually it increased its popularity with the end of rating surveying in Turkey.

As brands became blind on the ratings, the brand owners started looking for more creative ways of putting their brands forward.

Soon product placement became a hit.

But yet correct and strategic product placement is still an enigma in Turkey.

Unfortunately, the marketing people often ignore the strategic aspects of product placement.

One of the main reasons for this is the fact that marketers in Turkey are not sure where to position product placement.

Usually the marketing people of Turkey do not cut down from their TV advertising budgets in sake of product placement; they cut down from their sponsorship budgets.

Thus the marketing people of Turkey see product placement as a form of sponsorship.

This is not a correct approach to product placement.

Sponsorship communications contains a brand name in a selected context and is enhancing the corporate image.

On the other side product placement shows the company's product itself (with the brand name) being used in other already created environment and in the right way, enabling product features to be easily demonstrated.

It is the most effective form of synergy between traditional advertising and content generators.

For first time content generations are working this close with the advertiser brands and their advertising agencies.

Currently around 100 brands use product placement methodologies in Turkey. This is still a small number of brands compared to USA here around 650 top brands use product placement methodologies..

The marketing researches undergone in Turkey show that around 80% of viewers are aware of the brands placed in their usual content (especially the TV series).  None of the viewers segments have stated any discomfort with the content placed.

According the statistics provided by the association of advertisers, in average 400 products are placed in to existing contents in a typical month.

The content created specially for the product placement equals to around 45 hours in a typical year.

We watch 45 hours content written specially for the brand as part of our usual content we consume.

Doing right product placement is critical.

1. It’s a Branded Entertainment

Don't forget it’s only a branded form of existent entertainment.
The content is still the king.
The entertainment should not suffer anything from the brand introduced.
Product placement should not detract from the story being told.
The already created entertaining content should not loose resonance with the consumers as soon as the brand pops up.
If the entertainment is loosing in power, its not only the content, which is hurt but also the image of the brand, suffers substantially.
The brand is perceived as less entertaining than usual.
The consumers start perceiving the product as detractive and annoying.
Integration without any compromises to the original artistic substance, and creativity of the content is a must

2. Intermittent Usage

One of the main mistakes the marketing people do in Turkey is concerned to the times the product is placed in a single content.
Usually the marketing people in Turkey prefer a single but bold usage of a product in a part of the content.
This actually is not the right way of doing product placement.
The right strategy should focus on subtle showings of the products at intermittent times of the story.
In that way the product becomes a natural ally to the content and creates more resonance.

3. Single Character Integration
It is critical to integrate the brand to the story by using one of tis appealing characters.
This is another mistake often done in Turkey. The brand gets integrated only as part of the story but no single character is involved.
The positive hero of the plot should use the product in a longer term and different part of the story.
The brand should not be only endorsed but it should help the hero develop the depth of its own character.

4. Timing Is Critical
The timing of the product placement will determine how successful the campaign will be.
Historically it is proven that product placement success is tightly attached to high season sales and special times.
The product placements do not yield the intended results if aired off-season.
Do your product placement during peak times such as Bayram, New Year, Back to School etc.
Retailers will be more responsive to promote your products if placed during those times.
5. Place and Promote
Do not place your product for creating basic awareness or building brand equity.
Forming a promotional content is actually the very essence of an effective product placement campaign.
There are always two main participants in a product placement deal: brand and the promotional vehicle.
The promotional vehicle created should be aligned to the usual content (i.e.: a promotional vehicle valid only for the viewers of the content in question)
In a cross-promotion program these two participants share their promotional channels, hence creating promotional exposure to each other by combining their target audiences.

6. Use Visual Symbols
Turkish culture is characterized as group-explicit non-verbal style.
Symbols are important for the Turkish audience.
Turkish consumers look for visual symbols to communicate.
Turks may be more apt to note brand symbolism in their usual contents.
Do not place a plain brand to the content. Create a world of visual symbols specific for each content you place your brand in.

Yeni Nesil Araştırma

For English Please Click

Değişimin son on yılda yoğunluklu olarak beş ana alanda süregeldiğini görüyoruz.

1) Bilgi Entegrasyonu
2) Teknolojik Gelişmeler
3) Sosyal Medya
4) Davranışla Tutumu Ayırt Etme
5) Seçim Mimarisi

1) Bilgi Entegrasyonu

New Generation Research

The world of market research has a golden rule: The consumer will tell you all you need to know about him – as long as you know where to look for the answers...

Brands have not cut down on market research budgets in Turkey where the global economical crisis has had relatively little effect. However, brand managers have quite increased expectations on the return of every penny they spend.

Brand managers prefer to work with researchers who are clear on where to look for the answers within the new complicated world of marketing.

This pressure creates the need for a renewed definition of the role the market researcher has in the world of marketing.

Anyways, being good in conventional research has not been enough for a long time now.

In the new research world, building statistical models successfully is no longer an advantage but has become a hygiene factor. Accompanying digital and technological developments have carried the role research must undertake beyond that.

So where must the new generation researcher look for the answers?

To answer this question, one must look where change is mostly taking place.

We see that the change has been taking place in five main areas in the last ten years.

1) Information Integration
2) Technological Developments
3) Social Media
4) Distinguishing Behavior and Attitude
5) Choice Architecture

1) Information Integration

Brands would like a more holistic look from the new generation researchers so that work with high added value can be delivered.

While the brand manager plans his brand across 360 degrees, the fact, that he is obliged to learn the information setting the basis for this planning in bits and pieces, makes it hard for him to do his job properly.

Brand managers demand the integration of all the data because they know they can create the 1+1=3 effect only then.

In line with this change, the traditional categorization of market research, e.g. image research, usage and attitude research etc., is now left behind.

The new generation researchers do not place information at the center anymore.

When you place information at the center, information becomes the end rather than the means.

In that case, you confronted with market share data as one goal and brand image data as totally another.

It gets impossible to integrate such a data structure.

So what must the new generation researcher place in the center for integration to take place naturally?

Once understanding and managing client life cycle becomes fundamental for the new generation researcher, information becomes the means. It is then that integration takes place naturally.

2) Technological Developments

Neuroscience has all of a sudden become popular as a new research methodology for global brands.

However, it has lost its popularity very quickly due to misusage.

New generation researchers know that it is still possible for neuroscience to contribute to the brand in case it is applied correctly.

Neuroscience samples need to be limited due to budget and time constraints. That is why using neuroscience in lieu of quantitative research causes serious mistakes. Neuroscience should be a qualitative approach.

It is a tough methodology to use in research that will set the base for global decisions since cultural deviations are immense. New generation researchers use neuroscience as a local initiative only.

Neuroscience techniques should not be used by themselves. Even though there are advancements in tracking the neurons, we can still see only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding the feelings behind neural ignition.

Neuroscience can provide unique and valuable additional information when it is used supplementary to the existing research techniques.

3) Social Media

Social media analysts will continue to develop their own methods against traditional market research models and they will raise their voices more bravely against traditional researchers each passing day.

Brands will feel no hesitation to knock on the doors of these analysts.

A research held at the Carnegie Mellon University has already shown that Twitter data stands out as a way to track public opinion reliably.

While traditional researchers criticize social media to be a closed and nonrepresentative medium, social media analysts know very well that “What happens in social media does not stay in social media”.

What takes place in social media is somehow carried on to main stream media and instantly becomes a mass phenomenon.

A good example of that is Aziz Yıldırım and the “Is that so Samet?” case.

4) Distinguishing Behavior and Attitude

In the last 50 years of marketing it has been believed that consumer behavior developed in line with attitude only.

The science of marketing focused entirely on changing attitude.

However, when all the brands in the category focus on changing attitude, the pressure applied on the consumer results in the consumer taking his attitude under preservation.

Whereas the new generation researchers know that when you change the consumer’s behavior without focusing on his attitude, the consumer will reconstruct his inner balance and consequently will also change his attitude over time.

That is the very reason why new generation researchers focus on the behavior they would like to change before focusing on brand preferences.

They do not find tracking attitude adequate and consult models that track behavior.

5) Choice Architecture

New generation researchers stand out as choice architects.

“Choice architects” redesign the environments where people make choices, in order to understand those environments and to facilitate the decision in favor of the brand.

New generation researchers have started sparing substantial budgets for choice architecture projects.

Choice architects focus on four basic issues: facilitating the decision, understanding decision making mistakes, developing methodologies that enable feedback, and understanding how automated behavior is formed over time.

The new generation researcher, who considers choice architecture to be important, believes that current research models are unnecessarily complicated.

It is impossible to understand the easiness required by the consumer while making his choices, through ultra combined questionnaires.

The researcher that can identify the correct measurement criteria for easiness does not need 25-page questionnaires.

Gençle İletişim

For English Please Click

Her şeyleri anlık. Gece aşırı popüler olmak istiyorlar. Asiler. Kuralları reddediyorlar.

Peki bu zor kitleye ulaşmanın yolları nelerdir.

Öncelikle bir hatayı düzeltmekle başlayalım.

Anne babalar genç denince hep umuttan bahsederler.

Fazla zorlama olduğunu düşündükleri an markanın fazla “satışçı” olduğunu düşünüyorlar ve reddediyorlar.

Levis 501’in rıhtımdan suya atlayan gençler sevilir.

Çocuk çirkindir. Kız değişim süreci içindedir. İkisi çok gerçektir, aşkları da öyle. Ancak o an yaptıkları

Communicating To The Young Consumer

They were born in 1980 and later.

They are more than eight million in Turkey.

They are a more self-confident, sociable and fun-loving generation.

Their transition to adulthood takes much longer than that of past young generations.

They are tough audience to communicate to. It is very tough to convert that communication into sales.

Their philosophy in life is Oscar Wilde’s statement: “There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”

It is for this cause that they use technology ruthlessly.

Their lives are surrounded with social networks, smart phones, computer games, Twitter, and Facebook.

Lately, Instagram and Tumblr, where they can share deeper content, have picked up speed in their lives.

They do not know a life without Internet.

They have long created their life ecosystems and parallel identities in the digital universe and have started living there.

They socialize and flirt with these unreal identities. They form unreal friend networks, share photos, brag, lie, gossip.

Everything is momentary. They want to be extremely popular at night. They are rebels. They refuse rules.

So how is this difficult audience to be reached?

Let’s begin by correcting a mistake.

Parents always talk about hope when talking about the young. “Our future, the young” is the most cliché of all sayings.

The young never mention hope when talking about themselves.

They reject the responsibility to carry the future and they find such statements too “cheesy”.

The young usually mention their fears when they talk about themselves.

The primary way of understanding the young is to understand their fears.

Ordinariness is their biggest fear. Fear that the days will pass by in the same routine and with the same ordinariness.

That is why happiness is always momentary.

For the young, happiness is a heart beat. If you catch the chance to do something that will make you happy right that moment, you’ve got to do it. You must not wait.

You’ve got to scream. You’ve got to sing. You’ve got to sit on the street on İstiklal.

Even though they have the ability to understand communication much better than adults, they don’t want to get it on purpose. They are more inclined to criticism than adults.

Do not knock yourself against a brick wall trying to explain - they do not listen.  They do not understand if they are not having fun - they do not want to understand.

Here is an audience that likes communication short and sweet.

If you cannott be short and sweet, if you go into too much detail, this means you are overtrying.

It is an audience one should never overtry with.

Because cool brands never try harder than necessary. They are not criers. They are brands that know what to say where.

There are certain topics this difficult audience falls for.

Of course, the most important one is the freedom theme.

All young people believe that they are somehow revolting against “authority”.

Certainly none of them define themselves as being obedient.

This revolt may be against parents, the school, the system, the municipality, the landlord, or the teacher. Most of the time, the object of the revolt is not even aware of the situation.

They find someone or something to revolt against in any case.

However if this battle is to be addressed, the advertiser certainly must not exaggerate this notion of battle.

When compared to their “peers” in Europe, the battle of the Turkish youth against authority seems quite harmless and symbolic.

Therefore the accent of your communication should be on freedom rather than rebellion.

Another important headline is Urban Legends.

The young love to hear and tell cool, funny, and absurd urban legends.

This is the “Man, a friend of mine sued Pepsi Max saying he drank it but Aysun did not kiss him” talk.

The brand needs to create a basis for this kind of chat to happen.

One way to do this is to carry internet incidents, which have momentarily become popular, into the communication at once.

If the communication is themed after an urban legend, you need to position the role of your brand so that it will not harm the absurdity of the communication.

The young do not want to see the brand within the communication as much as the adults.

The minute they think it is trying too hard, they think the brand is “selling” and they reject it.

Another topic they love is Romanticized Realities.

The content will be romantic however they dislike the talk of great loves and enormous ideals.

Romance should be offered at a certain reality level.

Love should be real. It should be sincere.

The characters you will choose are among the key points here.

The young does not want to see his/her daily life on the ad.

He/she wants to see something more interesting and adventurous than his own life on the ad.

The young wants to identify with what is more adventurous than himself/herself – not what is the same as him/her.

However, you must not stray too much from real life when choosing the characters.

People love Levi’s 501’s two youngsters jumping off the dock.

The guy is ugly. The girl is in a transition period. These two are very real and so is their love. But what they are doing at that very moment is not ordinary. It is different. This is why people like this communication.

In short, whatever you do, never underestimate the young consumer audience.

A bad communication targeting young people results in much more dangerous consequences than bad communication targeting adults.

The WOM (word of mouth effect) effect of this audience is four times more than that of the adults.

And since they use digital ruthlessly to make their propaganda, you can never foresee where a negative word put in for the brand will end up.

İçgörü Bulma Kılavuzu

For English Please Click

İçgörü, tüketicinin yaşadığı her alanda yaşar.

How To Generate Insights

The necessity to base every communication activity on a real consumer insight has been one of the topics most emphasized by the marketing and communication world within the last 15 years.

Without exception, every presentation given by communications professionals to brand managers begins with a strategy section.

The only responsibility of the strategist is to make the brand manager believe in the insight he/she presents.

In fact, brand managers propound that the ability to find insights is the quality that distinguishes a good adman from a bad one.

Moreover, experienced communications professionals know that bad advertisement built on a good insight is not favored but always sells.

Even the best advertisement built on a bad insight will never work.

If insight is this important, what is the definition of insight and how does one reach it?

Now this is where the whole problem starts...

It is almost impossible to model the ways that lead to insight.

Today’s marketing science does not yet have a definitive approach which says “this is how you find an insight”.

Even if definitive methods do not exist, the marketing world knows a lot on the “NO GO” areas and some of the must-haves...

What are these?

Insight Is Arrogant...

Even if there exists no mutual agreement on the definition of insight, the majority of the marketing world defines it as introversion - introspection.

This definition may be right or wrong according to whose inner world it emerges from.

If the adman is looking for the insight within the consumer’s inner world, this definition turns out right.

However, the adman gets detached from reality once he/she starts looking for the insight within his/her inner world.

Insight is a human condition, feeling, reality...

Insight cannot be searched for in fancy offices between four walls.

Even if one does, it cannot be found.

Insight lives in every area where the consumer lives. At the bus stop, in the dolmuş, in the living room, at the bazaar, in the consumer’s kitchen, at the canteen...

The search for insight starts as you step outside.

Insight is arrogant, it does not come to you.

You will have to go to it.

Insight Is Independent From Your Product

Now let’s talk about a scenario quite familiar to all brand managers.

Creative folks scribble down the scenario without looking at the insight at all.

Left vis-à-vis a situation completely contrary to what should have been, the strategist has no choice but adapt the insight to the scenario.

The strategist faltering under these circumstances comes up with a insight connected to the product to be advertised instead of finding a real insight (it is impossible to find one any more).

For example, if the product to be advertised is offered in a practical package, the strategist who cannot come up with a real insight makes up a case about the product: “Consumers are not happy with the x product which has an unpractical package because...”

The brand manager who sees that the insight has emanated from (or is entirely about) the product to be advertised must halt that meeting.

Because the insight should never be derived from the product subject to a communication.

The consumer’s feelings, needs, and states live outside of the product.

One must start the search for the insight with the desire to discover a “human reality” - never with the wish to find a product fact...

Insight Is Never a Math...

This “human reality” should never be in the form of numeric information/findings.

Information and findings matter, however, in most cases, all the brands within the category possess the same information. Consequently, it is difficult to find an area of differentiation starting off from here.

The arrival at the “human reality” begins with the discovery of factors deep within – factors which incite consumption but which are not entirely uncovered.

To discover, you need to be a very good observer.

It does not suffice to be observant. You must be a good moderator and beyond asking questions, you need to know how to really talk to the consumer.

Insight is not found within tables but in the deep meaning that resides within those tables.

Insight Is Never Your First Hypothesis...

After the discovery of the human reality comes the hypothesis-forming phase.

One should not present the brand with the first hypothesis that comes his way.

Hypotheses exist to be broken down and to be simplified.

You need to smash your hypothesis on a wall through tough interrogations and see it shatter into thousands of pieces.

You can be sure that if you do not shatter it, the consumer will. And when this happens, you will be caught off guard against the reactions to the brand.

Once you begin to reassemble your hypothesis which you had shattered into pieces with your own questions, if you have not reached a theory much plainer and simpler than before the shattering, it means you have not been able to manage the smashing process right. Start over.

Continue with this process until your hypothesis takes its plainest state.

What Good Is An Insight That Does Not Activate....

So you have a plain hypothesis... The first thing you need to do is to see if it is activating or not.

The correct insight is written out in the form of a hypothesis and always activates.

You can consult research companies to test the activation potential of your hypothesis.

If the research company confirms that your hypothesis does activate, it means the right insight has led you to the target. You can now proceed with the scenario adaptation.
